One Day Project - Skull

So here is the one day project I set myself, and intend to set myself every week. Or try to at least. Illustration Friday is a brilliant website particularly for those who enjoy art and illustration (of course!). And as the title suggests, every Friday there is a different topic which is used as the simplest brief for artists and creatives to create and upload a piece of work.
This week the topic is 'Skull' and if you take a look at the website you'll see there are many wonderful and inspired pieces. I've seen just as many by children and school students as there are professional artists. I hope to be able to answer the brief every week as a way to keep my creative juices flowing and build up my portfolio in the simplest way. By doing this, it will also help me continue with illustration, if I'm waiting for any particular reason on my commissions and other pieces of work.

Progress yesterday …

Bear Inspiration!

If you haven't checked out Bored Panda yet you need to - it has to be the best, inspirational and fun websites I've come across in a while. From beautiful photography to just pure creative genius, you'll find some fantastic ideas and stories.
If you've been following my Large Animal Canvas Project, you'll see that one of the animals included in the composition is a bear cub playing with his friends (or brothers - idea from my client) mole, rabbit and mouse.
I couldn't resist posting these pictures from Bored Panda of mothers teaching their cubs valuable lessons, I'm sure, for when they're older. Incredibly cute and the perfect inspiration for me. It has to be the best timing for something like this to pop up!
Here I've posted some of my favourite images. x

Prints and Originals for Sale

I want to get rid of some of my original drawings - I simply can't keep them all! So as you know, I've been selling some of my original art work and sending off for prints at really cheap prices. It's actually been hard to part with some of it but it's also been really rewarding and the support I've had already has been incredible. So a massive thank you to those who have requested some of my work and I hope that it's what you're after. I really appreciate the support and am so flattered, thank you. :)

Colour Palette

So I have here a few (very brief) snippets of some practices with ink and acrylic paint on a canvas. I'm not as confident with acrylic paint, so I needed to familiarise myself with how it moves across the canvas with the paint brush. As I said these are only a few experiments, extremely brief, to also test the colour palette but at least it's a start. There will be more to come - the nest stage is doing a mock up (quickly) of the final thing. Let's get on this!

Saying Goodbye to Monkey

I've been selling a lot of my degree work, particularly my original ink drawings for my 'Clever Rat' book. So there's good and sad news. I've sold some which is a fantastic step in my illustration career, however that did mean saying good bye to one of my favourite pieces of artwork. I absolutely adored this monkey and although I have a large mounted version (in colour) at home, there was something about that original that I loved. I think its because it reminds me so much of my brother :) and of course, I love him to pieces too!

Love for you John!

Little Animals having Fun!

So here's the next lot of animal drawings for one of my first projects! The idea is that the animals are based on 4 children; young brother's and each chose an animal - which make up the illustration. My client wanted them to be playing and interacting with each other as they're her children and believe it or not, I've actually found it rather difficult to put a composition together. I've only done a few, but these are to get an idea of what's wanted. I know there's always improvement to be made but I am falling in love with these creatures really quickly!

My Art Cupboard

So I thought it would be fun to show you a little snippet of my art world at home - and most of that would be in my cupboard. OR I should say that actually I have loads everywhere around the house but the best way to sum it up would be in my art cupboard because that's where it's organised.

I have often found it difficult to get rid of shoe boxes, gift boxes, boxes in general, but when it came to putting everything in here, it worked out quite well. So a lot of the little bits and bobs are kept together in my old shoe boxes! I literally have everything from thread, string and ribbon to many different types and sizes of paper (of course!) to glitter glue and even FIMO! (Ask my about FIMO another time - all you need to know is that it's brilliant!)

The only annoying thing now is that I'm running out of room and there's so much more I'd like to have!

A Fresh Start

Hi there guys! I'm BACK! Okay so I must firstly apologise for leaving you guys for so long! But I'm back, hopefully on track and as busy as ever! I have so many plans going on at the moment, I plan to work towards an ETM course and hopefully continue to kick start my illustration!

So this may be a longer post than usual but here are some of the things to be looking forward to. (Whether they all happen or not os another matter!)

I have been commissioned, which is very exciting and nerve racking at the same time, so I hope that I can do a good job. These are some of the drawings you have already seen, with the small group of animals. Of course along the way I plan to make some changes and develop them further so there will be more to come!

There is also a fashion/styling commission in the air so be sure to keep an eye open for that!

Then … what to do after??? I don't want to stop drawing and I need to build my portfolio so, the plan is to set myself a few briefs from animals charities. My strength is illustrating animals and that's exactly what I intend to do.  Not too sure which ones yet but I have a few ideas :) plus Im interested in finding the smaller charities, I feel that would be more of a challenge and different and would help contribute to their awareness.

These things always take longer than expected so naturally I don't expect to finish these things any time soon, but in the mean time here are some more drawings for my 'Large Canvas Project'. (This is probably the simplest and best way of describing it - until I think of something else!)

Enjoy x
